ABSTRACT

Today, with the development of digital illustration methods and the internet communication channels that publish them, there is a noticeable increase in the use of ancient pagan motifs. The use of ancient motifs and pagan symbols covers various areas such as social media, ethnic fairs, tattoo art and cultural posters. This interest goes beyond being just a visual trend, and can also be associated with deep sociocultural contexts and historical roots. However, the revival of images requires that the cognitive and origin-related factors that form the basis of their contemporary use be addressed as an interdisciplinary field of study in addition to sociological research. Therefore, it is important to conduct research to evaluate the reasons underlying the revival of ancient pagan figures in the digital environment in the context of visual arts in today’s society. In this paper, examples and short narratives of petroglyphs and primitive visuals from Asian and European geographies are presented in order to demonstrate pagan themes, and the reason why they are the center of attention in contemporary art is questioned with existing digital examples. Finally, the production methods of pagan images and motifs produced in the digital environment are emphasized, and pagan period motifs and images from different cultures are evaluated and examined within the framework of graphic design.
