Abstract

For countries and our country learning a foreign language has a great importance. Nowadays in an increasingly globalising world day by day the importance of learning a foreign language is increasing. The teaching and learning of a foreign language in an effective and lasting way becomes as important as this. Recent language learning methodology favours a student-centred education instead of a teacher-fronted education. In this respect an education which puts emphasis on the preferences, feelings and priorities of the learners is preferred. The educational environment becomes softer and more humanistic. The use of poems which appeal to the affective side of the learners and because of the reasons stated above the use of poetry in the foreign language teaching-learning environment is very important. In addition as Gardner (1983) has pointed it out in his theory of Multiple Intelligences; because of the language item, rhythm, musicality and measure which it carries poetry which appeals to most of the seven intelligences Gardner has given is also important in this respect.
